Lake Sinclair, located along the Oconee River, is steeped in both natural beauty and american history. Prior to the development of Wallace Dam (1949), the current on the Oconee River in 1804 made this the perfect location for the new state capitol.During the mid 19th century Milledgeville prospered thanks to the Cotton boom. The rapidly flowing current of the Oconee River, between Milledgeville and Darien, provided a major shipping therefare for Georgia's booming Cotton Trade.

Work began in 1929 on what is now Wallace Dam, a Georgia Power hydro-power dam. Although, construction soon came to an end in 1930 due to the Great Depression. Building resumed in 1949, creating what we now know as Lake Oconee to the north and Lake Sinclair to the south. This hydropower dam now provides electricity for some of Central Georgia.
